What the numbers mean, how a session works, and what to expect.
How a session works
Pre-cool
The chamber cools itself to its working temperature before anyone steps in. Electric chambers use a compressor and can take up to an hour. Nitrogen chambers chill the air with liquid nitrogen.
Step in
You step into the cabin. In an open-top chamber your head stays above the rim in room air. In a whole-body chamber your head is inside the cold space with the rest of you.
A short, cold session
Sessions are short, typically 1 to 3 minutes, at a very low air temperature. The touchscreen runs an automatic program or lets the operator adjust settings by hand.
Step out
When the program ends you step out and warm up. Safety features such as an emergency stop and, on some models, oxygen monitoring stay active throughout.

Chambers are rated in degrees Celsius. For comparison, the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth is about -89°C.

Electric vs. nitrogen
Electric chambers cool with a compressor, much like an air conditioner, so there is no nitrogen to buy or store. They need more power and a heat-rejection setup. Nitrogen chambers chill the air with liquid nitrogen, reach the deepest cold and use about 3 to 5 L per session, but need a steady nitrogen supply.
Open-top vs. whole-body
In an open-top chamber, such as the CryoStar Antarctica, your head stays above the rim in normal room air. In a whole-body chamber, such as the Antarctica Barrel and the CryoStar WBC Electric, your head is inside the chamber with you.
Simple vs. Grand
Grand versions add capability. On the electric chambers that means a second compressor, and on the Barrel a colder range (-110°C compared with -80°C). On the CryoStar nitrogen chamber, Grand adds a thermal vision camera and oxygen sensor monitor, and Grand M adds a 21 in. display.
kW, amps and phases
Kilowatts (kW) show how much power the chamber draws, and amps show the circuit it needs. Three-phase power is a heavy-duty supply common in commercial buildings. Have an electrician confirm your service before you order.
Water, drain and chillers
Electric chambers must shed heat. Depending on the model that means air cooling with ventilation, water cooling with a supply and drain line, or an external chiller that needs outdoor space and its own power.

The Antarctica Barrel and the CryoStar WBC Electric are whole-body electric chambers that run down to -110°C (Barrel) and -100°C (WBC Electric) with no nitrogen.
